After the success of the mini festival that Chaika brought to Tomerong 2 years ago, you again have the chance to join in an afternoon and evening of festival atmosphere. Enjoy workshops for kids and adults, a concert, food, drink and plenty of chance for jamming in between! We encourage everyone to come along, bring instruments, families and friends and help create a mini festival at Tomerong Hall.
4pm: Kids Workshop – Appropriate for ages 4 to 14
Learn fun rhythms, dance and melody to some crazy Balkan music and then discover the instrument world of Chaika – how high can a violin go? What makes an accordion wheeze? What is that giant bass violin? And what does that huge drum sound like from the inside? This hour long workshop will engage kids of a wide age group. Those who can play an instrument should bring it along and will have a chance to learn some music and play with the band. We will also have a variety of percussion instruments for experimentation! Kids under 8 should be supervised by a parent.
5:30pm: Singing workshop – open to all those who sing
Chaika will teach you two songs with harmonies. Melodies and harmonies from a beautiful Hebrew song from our second album and a Macedonian song from our first will be taught. We will teach the music by ear and have notes available for those who would like them. The songs we will be working on are Ma Navu (Hebrew) and Jovano Jovanke (Macedonian). The latter is in 7/8 so we’ll look at how to feel odd time signatures. Stylistic approaches to the songs, including some ornamentation, will be touched on too. Come join us to make some beautiful sounds together!
6:30pm: A perfect opportunity to grab a bite to eat, bring out some instruments and have a jam, tell a funny story or two, recite some poetry and just have a good old yarn with some friends.
7:30pm: Concert with Chaika
