Folky balkan jazz with cinematic classicism
… spellbinding beauty … exhilarating energy.
Welcome to Chaika
2016 took Chaika to many places, including a May tour through NSW and the ACT; the wonderful Humph Hall for a charity fundraiser for UNHCR; the gorgeous Kangaroo Valley Folk Festival; and a whirlwind November tour to Queensland.
We started 2017 with a bang supporting Irish multi-platinum artist Sharon Shannon for her only Sydney show at The Basement: from the likes of playing alongside Bono, Sinead O’Connor, and Alison Krauss, we felt like we were in very good company, especially when her band got cranking out the tunes and the crowd was stomping along.
Our exciting news for this year is that we are getting ready to record our third album. We’ve spent a year and a half of work honing a dozen or so brand new tunes that we started writing at Bundanon in May 2015 while we were Artists in Residence there. Our audiences have been loving this new music as much as we do and we’re looking forward to recording it later this year.
On Saturday 17 June we’re performing at Django Bar to celebrate the last night of Vivid Sydney. Unfortunately due to illness the wonderful Miriam Lieberman who was originally programmed to play with her trio will no longer be performing at this show. We’re stepping in to take her place at short notice.
We’ll be playing a range of old favourites through to brand new tunes that will be making their first debut in Sydney. It’s the last night of the Vivid Festival so come out and party with us!
